Experiences of Athletes and Parents
Coach Bernstein is one of, if not the best hidden-gem of javelin mentorship in the state of New Jersey. From our time together I felt we developed a strong and profound relationship that began at the very first session when I realized that he was different from any coach I had previously had. His ability to recognize an athlete’s challenges and approach to breaking through barriers is unlike anything I would’ve imagined. Some of the classical challenges in javelin throwing were resolved with non-traditional but very effective methods of drilling and discipline. The javelin is an extremely complex event that requires a deep “feel” of the event both physically and mentally. Coach Bernstein provided me with some of the best mentorship in both aspects of the javelin of which I carry with me today at the collegiate level. - Jerrick Zhang – Boys Javelin Thrower – West Windsor–Plainsboro High School North, Class of ’13 – Plainsboro, NJ (> University of California, Santa Barbara – UCSB, Class of 2017)
Erik is one of the most passionate coaches I have ever met. From beginning to end it was evident that he loves the sport and truly enjoys spreading his understanding of the javelin to his athletes. His attention to specific details of the throw helped Jerrick succeed in high school and elevate him to the collegiate level. His unwavering support of my son’s throwing was evident from his detailed communication and recap of every throwing session and was a keen eye at some of the most important meets of New Jersey post-season track and field. - Anney Zhang – Parent of Jerrick Zhang – Boys Javelin Thrower – West Windsor–Plainsboro High School North, Class of ’13 – Plainsboro, NJ (> University of California, Santa Barbara – UCSB, Class of 2017)
Our daughter worked with Erik for over two years. Erik definitely knows his craft and is a good resource on javelin throwing on the high school and collegiate level. He provides suggestions for working out on your own and effective strategies for handling competitive situations at meets. He gives his undivided attention to each session. Likewise, he will take time out of his schedule to attend meets and provide additional guidance to help an athlete perform her best at every throwing opportunity. He cares about the person – not just the athlete – and has been consistently enthusiastic, patient and attentive. – Michael and Maureen Davin – Parents of Katie Davin – Girls Javelin Thrower - Red Bank Catholic High School (RBC), Class of ‘14 – Red Bank, New Jersey (>University of Notre Dame, Class of 2018)
Erik, Thanks so much for coaching Peter! He had reached his maximum using the throwing style he had, and after only six lessons he started to get used to the new style, embrace it, and boy did it work! His championship throw at the NEPSTA meet capped off a difficult transition that initially cost him distance and then gave him the foundation to become the best thrower in the New England Prep Schools. Your constant care for him and taking the time to speak with him when he had questions was a great help. We're looking forward to seeing what he can do in the Ivy League next year! Thanks again for the enjoyable times, it's an incredible experience. Best regards, David and Leslie Holst-Grubbe – David and Leslie Holst-Grubbe - Parents of Peter Holst-Grubbe - Boys Javelin Thrower - Avon Old Farms High School, Class of ’08 – Avon, Connecticut (>Columbia University, Class of 2012)
Let's see... from the beginning of our practicing it has been an all around new experience. Emotionally, mentally, and physically I have changed and matured as a javelin thrower and a person throughout my experience (so far). Erik is not only the best javelin thrower I have ever seen but he is passionate and patient and utmost believes in what the javelin symbolizes. Whoever begins to practice with Erik will know how special he truly is and gifted in this unique art. I would gladly recommend any person passionate in javelin and wants to learn how to use their utmost potential while throwing the javelin and using these new learned techniques in every day life. His coaching is outstanding and you will never forget what you learn - Blair Hassell - Girls Javelin Thrower - Freehold Boro High School, Class of '08 – Freehold, New Jersey (>Fordham University, Class of 2012)
A Parent's Perspective…My son received one on one javelin coaching sessions with Erik for a little more than a year. Erik is very professional in his coaching and has a unique ability to convey his knowledge of the correct skills involved in throwing the javelin. My son not only gained in his ability to throw the javelin with correct form, but also learned a lot of the intricate details involved in the body's movements and positions while throwing. Erik is always patient, supportive and has this unique ability to convey to his student athlete that he truly cares and knows how they are feeling about themselves and their progress at any given point. Because of all that is involved in the learning of this sport, I wanted my son to work with someone who had personally competed in the javelin, someone with first hand knowledge. Erik brought to the sessions all this personal experience. My son always came away from his training sessions with a better understanding and ability. - Parent of Boys Javelin Thrower - Class of '08, West Morris Central High School – Chester, New Jersey
Erik Bernstein is a rare combination of coach and mentor. He brings great expertise to the table. That skill coupled with his love of the sport and his positive attitude makes him a rare find. I have seen my son grow under Erik's care. My son and I could not ask for a better Javelin coach and mentor. - Vernay Salas - Parent of Tony Salas - Boys Javelin Thrower - Middletown High School South, Class of '09 – Middletown, New Jersey
