General Notes About Camps in the State of California

The State of California has the largest population in the US and is third largest by area. Given the sheer size of the state and number of people, there are several regions which reflect a clustering of summer camps. The two largest metropolitan areas in the state - Los Angeles and San Francisco - contain a significant number of day camps which are embedded directly within their municipal boundaries as well as within outlying communities. The predominantly remote and rugged nature of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and it's respective forests lends itself well as an ideal setting for residential sleepaway camps and other summer programs. The Sierra's are relatively close to the state's major population center's vs. the Cascade Range which extends further north to the Oregon border. The vast expanse of the Central Valley and foothills may lend itself well to ranch or farm camps. Likewise, the enormous coastline provides an excellent location for specialized camp activities such as a surf camp, sailing, kayaking, marine biology / sea camp, etc. At the other extreme, California also contains a large expanse of desert terrain such as the Mojave desert and Death Valley in Southern California which are not as hospitable or forgiving as other regions and thus reflect a very minimal frequency of camps.

While much of the state experiences a temperate climate -- providing generally favorable conditions for camps to operate in the summer -- the climate in California varies tremendously from extremely hot desert temperatures in Death Valley to the much colder mountainous peaks of Yosemite National Park.

Summer programs which focus on or encounter wildlife will have a wide array of animals and plant life to observe: bears, mountain lions, rattlesnakes, ancient redwoods, douglas fir, wild mountain flowers, Joshua trees, cacti and other desert species to name a few.
